Types of Braces
Traditional Metal Braces
Read More
Traditional metal braces are the most common type of braces and are more comfortable today than ever before. Made of high-grade stainless steel, metal braces straighten your teeth using metal brackets and archwires. With metal braces, you have the option of adding colored elastics (rubber bands) for a more unique and colorful smile.

Why should your child receive an orthodontic evaluation by age 7?
In addition, if you notice any of the following in your child, check with your orthodontist:
- early or late loss of baby teeth
- speech difficulties
- difficulty in chewing or biting
- biting the cheek or the roof of the mouth
- mouth breathing
- facial imbalance
- jaws that shift or make sounds
- grinding or clenching of the teeth
Invisalign® Teen is made with a blue compliance indicator on each of the aligners. As you wear your aligners, the blue dot gradually fades, letting you know it is time for the next set of aligners in your series. The compliance indicator helps assure your parents, as well as your orthodontist, that you are wearing your aligners the prescribed amount of time: 20-22 hours a day.
What is involved in phase 1 of orthodontic treatment?
Phase 1 treatment is designed to prevent more severe problems later on in your child’s dental health. An orthodontist has control over creating space for the permanent teeth and correcting bite problems by addressing the structure of the jaws while growth is occurring. Your child’s bite is established by age seven, and the amount of crowding can be determined.
Phase 1 treatment presents the beneficial opportunity to:
- Influence jaw growth in a positive manner.
- Lower risk of trauma to protruded upper incisors.
- Improve aesthetics and self-esteem.
- Simplify and/or shorten treatment time for later corrective orthodontic treatments.
- Improve speech problems.
- Preserve space for erupting permanent teeth.
Allow us to guide your child’s oral development.

Palatal Expander
The palatal expander works to “expand” (or widen) your upper jaw by placing gentle pressure on your upper molars each time an adjustment is made. The animation below will teach you about when and how to properly adjust your expander. When you achieve the desired expansion, you will wear the appliance for several months to solidify the expansion and to prevent regression.

Adult Orthodontics
Many adults choose to receive treatment because they understand the importance of maintaining their health and want to feel better about their appearance. The American Association of Orthodontists states that one in four orthodontic patients is over the age of 21. Adults everywhere are taking advantage of the opportunity to receive orthodontic care, and now you can too.
Why would an adult consider orthodontic treatment?
With today’s orthodontic treatment options, you can choose from a variety of braces and appliances that are comfortable, aesthetically pleasing, and customized to meet your needs. Types of braces include:
- Clear braces
- Ceramic braces
- Self-ligating braces
- Lingual (behind the tooth) braces
- Invisible braces
- Traditional metal braces
What is the difference between adult orthodontics and children or teen orthodontics?
- Adult teeth may become worn and shift throughout life. We can correct missing or worn teeth with proper orthodontic treatment.
- Many adults received partial orthodontic treatment as a child but never had it completed. As an adult, they choose to complete their treatment to achieve the healthy smile they always wanted.
We recognize that adults and children have different needs and require different levels of attention. We will ensure that you receive the most appropriate treatments and that your specific needs are met.
Orthognathic Surgery
Orthognathic surgery corrects jaw irregularities to improve chewing, speech, breathing, and facial appearances. Surgically repositioning the jaw also moves the teeth, so braces are always performed in conjunction with jaw correction.
Typically, jaw growth stops by age 16 in females and 18 in males. In order to receive orthognathic surgery, the jaw must be done growing. Your orthodontist will consider surgical orthodontic treatment for adult patients with improper bites and those with facial aesthetic concerns.
What is involved in orthodontic surgery?
In upper jaw surgery, the jaw can be repositioned forward or backward, or the jaw can be raised or lowered. Specific movements may require the jaws to be separated, with bone added or removed to achieve the proper alignment and stability.
What are the benefits of orthognathic surgery?
The most important reward of having orthognathic surgery for many patients is achieving a beautiful, healthy smile that lasts a lifetime. Whether you need orthodontic treatment to correct a bad bite, malocclusion, or jaw abnormality, orthognathic surgery can help restore your confidence.

Retainers
Should you LOSE or BREAK your retainer, there will be an additional charge for us to remake this appliance. You need to contact our office as soon as possible so a replacement retainer can be made. As above, should you delay in contacting us, we are not responsible if your teeth shift.
What is the timeline for wearing retainers?
After that, you can reduce the amount of nighttime wear. Adult patients may never reduce this to less than nightly wear, seven nights per week. Adult teeth have a greater tendency to shift following the removal of braces.
How do you properly take care of your retainer?
- Brush your retainer with toothpaste when you brush your teeth.
- Keep your retainers away from any heat.
- Never wrap your retainer in a napkin or hidden on a table when eating.
- Always put your retainer back in its case for protection.
- Always bring your retainer to your next appointment.
iTero™ Digital Impressions – Speed, Accuracy & Comfort
For patients who are candidates for Invisalign aligners, an accurate impression is essential for effective treatment planning and orthodontic care. The accuracy and detail of the iTero scan vs a putty impression is comparable to watching HDTV over standard definition TV.
The iOC Scanner captures the contours of tooth and gingival structures, producing an accurate digital orthodontic scan in minutes. This non-invasive procedure is ideal for patients undergoing treatment with Invisalign and clear aligners. No unpleasant putty material traditionally associated with taking impressions.
How does iTero work?
Instead of shipping impressions to the lab to be scanned, the digital image of your teeth is sent electronically to the lab and is available in the Invisalign Clincheck system the very next day. This 3D model of your mouth can be used with all Invisalign services – including the Invisalign Outcome Simulator, which shows what your new smile might look like after treatment is completed.
What are the benefits of Teeth Scanning?
- Eliminates Putty Impressions – the most invasive procedure in daily orthodontic care. No more goopy, unpleasant aftertaste of traditional impressions. An increase in your comfort!
- Superior Accuracy – with no distortion from patient movement during set, removal of impression, or disinfection.
- Onscreen Visualization – allows for immediate adjustment to create the ideal orthodontic scan the first time. The iTero image appears on the screen as the orthodontist scans your mouth in real time!
- Single Use Imaging Shield – to ensure maximum cleanliness.
