Types of Braces

Traditional Metal Braces

Traditional Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces are the most common type of braces and are more comfortable today than ever before. Made of high-grade stainless steel, metal braces straighten your teeth using metal brackets and archwires. With metal braces, you have the option of adding colored elastics (rubber bands) for a more unique and colorful smile.

Clear Ceramic Braces

Clear (Ceramic) Braces

Ceramic braces are made of clear materials and are therefore less visible on your teeth than metal braces. For this reason, ceramic braces are used mainly on older teenagers and adult patients who have cosmetic concerns. While they are visually less prominent, they do require more attention to oral hygiene as ceramic braces are larger and are more brittle than their metal counterparts. For these reasons, ceramic braces tend to be used more on upper front teeth than on lower teeth.
Self-Litigating Braces

Self-Ligating Braces

Self-ligating braces are made from the same materials as traditional braces. However, self-ligating braces do not require the use of elastics, meaning fewer appointments and less friction being placed on the tooth. Self-ligating braces come with traditional metal, ceramic, or clear brackets. They are the same size as metal braces, but use a specialized clip in place of elastics to help the archwire guide teeth into place. The clip helps reduce the amount of pressure being placed on the tooth, and requires fewer adjustments because there are no elastics to replace.
Clear Aligners

Clear Aligners

Clear aligners are a series of invisible, removable, and comfortable acrylic trays that straighten your teeth like braces. Not only are the aligners invisible, they are removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment, plus brushing and flossing are less of a hassle. The aligners are comfortable and have no metal to cause mouth abrasions during treatment.
Lingual Braces

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are hidden behind the teeth and are therefore “invisible” when you smile. Lingual braces are 100% customized to match the shape of your teeth; the metal appliances are created uniquely for you. Lingual braces are a very reasonable option for athletes, models, actors/actresses, musicians who play wind instruments, and adult professionals.

All Ages

Beginning orthodontic treatment at a young age can pave the way for a lifetime of overall health and wellness. We recommend that a child have their first orthodontic evaluation by 7 years of age to detect potential early treatment signs while baby teeth are still present.

Why should your child receive an orthodontic evaluation by age 7?

While your child’s teeth may appear to be straight, there could be a problem that only an orthodontist can detect. We can identify any issues involving your child’s bite, oral development, and other potential problems. Early treatment may intercept potential problems by redirecting jaw growth, correcting harmful oral habits, and more. Through an early orthodontic evaluation, you’ll be giving your child the best opportunity for a healthy, beautiful smile.

In addition, if you notice any of the following in your child, check with your orthodontist:

  • early or late loss of baby teeth
  • speech difficulties
  • difficulty in chewing or biting
  • biting the cheek or the roof of the mouth
  • mouth breathing
  • facial imbalance
  • jaws that shift or make sounds
  • grinding or clenching of the teeth

Invisalign® Teen is made with a blue compliance indicator on each of the aligners. As you wear your aligners, the blue dot gradually fades, letting you know it is time for the next set of aligners in your series. The compliance indicator helps assure your parents, as well as your orthodontist, that you are wearing your aligners the prescribed amount of time: 20-22 hours a day.

What is involved in phase 1 of orthodontic treatment?

Phase 1 treatment is designed to prevent more severe problems later on in your child’s dental health. An orthodontist has control over creating space for the permanent teeth and correcting bite problems by addressing the structure of the jaws while growth is occurring. Your child’s bite is established by age seven, and the amount of crowding can be determined.

Phase 1 treatment presents the beneficial opportunity to:

  • Influence jaw growth in a positive manner.
  • Lower risk of trauma to protruded upper incisors.
  • Improve aesthetics and self-esteem.
  • Simplify and/or shorten treatment time for later corrective orthodontic treatments.
  • Improve speech problems.
  • Preserve space for erupting permanent teeth.

Allow us to guide your child’s oral development.

Palatal Expander

The palatal expander works to “expand” (or widen) your upper jaw by placing gentle pressure on your upper molars each time an adjustment is made. The animation below will teach you about when and how to properly adjust your expander. When you achieve the desired expansion, you will wear the appliance for several months to solidify the expansion and to prevent regression.

Adjusting the Palatal Expander

Step 1

Adjusting the Palatal Expander
In a well-lit area, tilt the patient’s head back.

Step 2

Adjusting the Palatal Expander
Place the key in the hole until it is firmly in place.

Step 3

Adjusting the Palatal Expander
Pushing the key towards the back of the mouth, you will notice the fender rotate and the new hole will appear. The rotation stops when the key meets the back of the expander.

Step 4

Adjusting the Palatal Expander

By pushing back and down towards the tongue, remove the key. The next hole for insertion of the key should now be visible.

Invisalign® Teen

Is your teen worried about getting braces because it might impact his or her lifestyle? Invisalign® Teen offers an alternative to traditional metal braces and is barely noticeable by friends and family.

The clear aligner system has revolutionized present day orthodontics and merges seamlessly with your teens busy lifestyle.

Benefits of Choosing Invisalign® Teen

Teens everywhere are loving the benefits of the clear, removable aligner system! The main perks include:

  • Fewer office visits
  • No food restrictions
  • Maintain good oral hygiene routine
  • Aesthetic appeal

Invisalign® Teen is made with a blue compliance indicator on each of the aligners. As you wear your aligners, the blue dot gradually fades, letting you know it is time for the next set of aligners in your series. The compliance indicator helps assure your parents, as well as your orthodontist, that you are wearing your aligners the prescribed amount of time: 20-22 hours a day.

Adult Orthodontics

Many adults choose to receive treatment because they understand the importance of maintaining their health and want to feel better about their appearance. The American Association of Orthodontists states that one in four orthodontic patients is over the age of 21. Adults everywhere are taking advantage of the opportunity to receive orthodontic care, and now you can too.

Why would an adult consider orthodontic treatment?

Orthodontic treatment is no longer just for teens. Adults can benefit from orthodontic treatment for a bad bite or malocclusion, causing teeth to fit together incorrectly. If your teeth are crowded or spaced apart, it can lead to tooth decay or gum disease. With proper adult orthodontic treatment, you can avoid these issues and achieve a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing smile.

With today’s orthodontic treatment options, you can choose from a variety of braces and appliances that are comfortable, aesthetically pleasing, and customized to meet your needs. Types of braces include:

  • Clear braces
  • Ceramic braces
  • Self-ligating braces
  • Lingual (behind the tooth) braces
  • Invisible braces
  • Traditional metal braces

What is the difference between adult orthodontics and children or teen orthodontics?

With teen and child orthodontics, the jawbones are still developing, making treatment easier to manage and control. For adults, these bones have stopped growing, and surgery may be needed to achieve desired results. Adults are also more likely to experience bone or gum loss due to prolonged periodontal disease. Other differences may include:

  • Adult teeth may become worn and shift throughout life. We can correct missing or worn teeth with proper orthodontic treatment.
  • Many adults received partial orthodontic treatment as a child but never had it completed. As an adult, they choose to complete their treatment to achieve the healthy smile they always wanted.

We recognize that adults and children have different needs and require different levels of attention. We will ensure that you receive the most appropriate treatments and that your specific needs are met.

Orthognathic Surgery

Orthognathic surgery corrects jaw irregularities to improve chewing, speech, breathing, and facial appearances. Surgically repositioning the jaw also moves the teeth, so braces are always performed in conjunction with jaw correction.

Typically, jaw growth stops by age 16 in females and 18 in males. In order to receive orthognathic surgery, the jaw must be done growing. Your orthodontist will consider surgical orthodontic treatment for adult patients with improper bites and those with facial aesthetic concerns.

What is involved in orthodontic surgery?

Orthodontic surgery is performed in a hospital with an oral surgeon and can take several hours, depending on the amount and type of surgery needed. In lower jaw surgery, the jawbone behind the teeth is separated, and the tooth-bearing portion is moved forward or backward, as needed.

In upper jaw surgery, the jaw can be repositioned forward or backward, or the jaw can be raised or lowered. Specific movements may require the jaws to be separated, with bone added or removed to achieve the proper alignment and stability.

What are the benefits of orthognathic surgery?

When you have completed surgery, you should be able to return to school or work within two weeks. After about 4 to 8 weeks of healing, your orthodontist will make a final adjustment to your bite. In most cases, braces are removed within 6–12 months following surgery.

The most important reward of having orthognathic surgery for many patients is achieving a beautiful, healthy smile that lasts a lifetime. Whether you need orthodontic treatment to correct a bad bite, malocclusion, or jaw abnormality, orthognathic surgery can help restore your confidence.

We offer Spanish-speaking services to accommodate any patient who needs orthodontic assistance.

Retainers

Your retainer is one of the essential components of your successful orthodontic journey. This removable appliance is carefully customized to maintain the results of your orthodontic treatment. The bone around your teeth and gums must reshape to match the new position of your teeth. We offer permanent retainers as a long-lasting maintenance procedure.

Should you LOSE or BREAK your retainer, there will be an additional charge for us to remake this appliance. You need to contact our office as soon as possible so a replacement retainer can be made. As above, should you delay in contacting us, we are not responsible if your teeth shift.

What is the timeline for wearing retainers?

During the first three to six months, you must wear your retainers 24 hours a day, seven days a week, except during meals. For the next 12 months, we recommend wearing your retainer at bedtime every night.

After that, you can reduce the amount of nighttime wear. Adult patients may never reduce this to less than nightly wear, seven nights per week. Adult teeth have a greater tendency to shift following the removal of braces.

How do you properly take care of your retainer?

Proper care of your retainers is essential to ensuring they maintain your orthodontic progress. We are here to help you treat your retainers right, so you can keep the lovely smile you’ve waited so long for. One of the most important things you must do is take out your retainers when eating or drinking any sugary drinks. Some other tips on taking care of your retainer include:

  • Brush your retainer with toothpaste when you brush your teeth.
  • Keep your retainers away from any heat.
  • Never wrap your retainer in a napkin or hidden on a table when eating.
  • Always put your retainer back in its case for protection.
  • Always bring your retainer to your next appointment.

iTero™ Digital Impressions – Speed, Accuracy & Comfort

Lindenhurst Orthodontics is proud to offer iTero Digital Impressions for our patients. Unpleasant putty impressions are a thing of the past with the iTero Digital system!

For patients who are candidates for Invisalign aligners, an accurate impression is essential for effective treatment planning and orthodontic care. The accuracy and detail of the iTero scan vs a putty impression is comparable to watching HDTV over standard definition TV.

The iOC Scanner captures the contours of tooth and gingival structures, producing an accurate digital orthodontic scan in minutes. This non-invasive procedure is ideal for patients undergoing treatment with Invisalign and clear aligners. No unpleasant putty material traditionally associated with taking impressions.

How does iTero work?

The iTero handheld wand takes a digital, 3D image of your prepared teeth, stopping as needed. The wand is non-invasive and you can breathe and swallow as needed during the procedure. If you need to move or adjust, you can do so – the accuracy of the handheld wand is first-rate. Needing to “re-do” impressions is rare. Plus, you can look at the iTero 3D image on the screen in real-time as the orthodontist moves the wand!

Instead of shipping impressions to the lab to be scanned, the digital image of your teeth is sent electronically to the lab and is available in the Invisalign Clincheck system the very next day. This 3D model of your mouth can be used with all Invisalign services – including the Invisalign Outcome Simulator, which shows what your new smile might look like after treatment is completed.

What are the benefits of Teeth Scanning?

  • Eliminates Putty Impressions – the most invasive procedure in daily orthodontic care. No more goopy, unpleasant aftertaste of traditional impressions. An increase in your comfort!
  • Superior Accuracy – with no distortion from patient movement during set, removal of impression, or disinfection.
  • Onscreen Visualization – allows for immediate adjustment to create the ideal orthodontic scan the first time. The iTero image appears on the screen as the orthodontist scans your mouth in real time!
  • Single Use Imaging Shield – to ensure maximum cleanliness.
