Early Orthodontic Treatment

A confident, healthy smile starts early. At Lindenhurst Orthodontics, we provide early orthodontic treatment for children to guide jaw growth, create space for developing teeth, and prevent more serious orthodontic problems later on.

Early Orthodontic Treatments Make a Difference

Early orthodontic treatment focuses on identifying and addressing orthodontic issues in children, typically between ages 7 and 10.

At this stage, children’s jaws are actively developing and they still have a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth. Because growth is still occurring, we can guide the jaw and tooth eruption patterns more predictably than we can in later adolescence or adulthood.

Also known as interceptive orthodontics or Phase 1 orthodontic treatment, this proactive approach lets us monitor and correct concerns at the time in your child’s development when treatment can be most effective.

Essential Information about Early Orthodontic Care

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children receive their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. This does not necessarily mean treatment will begin immediately, but it allows us to detect concerns early.

Early orthodontic treatment may help address:

Crowding or Severe Spacing
Crossbites, Underbites, or Overbites
Jaw Growth Discrepancies
Impacted or Blocked Permanent Teeth
Protruding Front Teeth
Thumb-Sucking or Other Harmful Habits

Phase 1 Orthodontic Treatment

Phase 1 orthodontic treatment is the first stage of orthodontic care for children, typically started between ages 7–10. Not every child requires early orthodontic treatment, as many children benefit from careful monitoring rather than immediate intervention.

When recommended by your orthodontist, Phase 1 treatment typically lasts 9–18 months and may involve:
  • Partial braces
  • Palatal expanders
  • Space maintainers
  • Growth-guidance appliances

After this phase of early orthodontics, children enter a monitoring period before any additional treatment is considered.

Pediatric Orthodontics FAQs

Asking questions is essential while considering any orthodontic treatment. Here are the most common questions we’re asked about ceramic and metal braces:

Early orthodontic treatment is provided while a child still has some baby teeth. It focuses on guiding jaw development and preventing more serious alignment problems as permanent teeth erupt.

Once permanent teeth have grown in, the timeframe for early treatment has lapsed and traditional orthodontic practices may be necessary.

Interceptive orthodontics is another term for early orthodontic treatment. It refers to intervening at the right developmental stage to “intercept” problems before they become more severe.

No. Many children do not require early treatment. An evaluation allows us to determine whether immediate care is beneficial or if monitoring growth is the best course of action.

Children should have their first orthodontic evaluation around age 7. This ensures that any developing concerns are identified early, even if treatment is not immediately necessary.

Possibly. Early orthodontic treatment does not always eliminate the need for braces later, but it often makes future treatment shorter, simpler, and more predictable.

Yes. Orthodontic treatment for kids is carefully planned around growth and development. Appliances are designed specifically for children and monitored regularly to ensure comfort and effectiveness.
